Frequently Asked Questions

  • Deep tissue massage is designed to work more slowly and deeply into areas of muscular tension, tightness and holding throughout the body. It is ideal when you are feeling stiff, heavy, restricted or in need of deeper physical release.

Sports massage is usually a little more focused and functional in its approach. It is designed to support mobility, recovery and movement, and may include assisted stretching and more targeted work around muscular imbalance, restriction or exercise-related tension.

  • Not at all. Sports massage can be helpful for anyone experiencing tightness, reduced mobility, physical strain or recurring areas of tension. You do not need to be an athlete to benefit from a more focused treatment designed to help the body move and recover more freely.

  • Deep tissue massage can feel intense at times, but it should always feel purposeful and manageable rather than overwhelming. At The Hidden Sanctuary, treatments are tailored to your body and your comfort, so pressure can be adjusted as needed. The aim is not to force the body, but to help it release.

  • Yes, in some cases acupuncture may be used with your consent as part of a deep tissue sports treatment. This can be particularly supportive for stubborn areas of tension, helping the muscles release more readily and preparing the body for deeper soft tissue work.

  • If you are feeling generally tight, stiff and in need of full-body release, Deep Tissue Full-Body Massage is usually the best place to begin. If you are dealing with restriction in movement, recurring tightness, exercise-related tension or a need for more mobility-focused work, Sports Massage may be the better fit. If you are unsure, we are always happy to guide you towards the treatment that feels most supportive for your body.

  • After a sports or deep tissue massage, it is important to give your body a little time to recover and integrate the treatment.

Rehydration is key. Drinking plenty of water afterwards can help support the tissues and replace fluids, especially if you have had a deeper treatment. In some cases, adding electrolytes can also be beneficial, particularly if you are very active, have been sweating a lot, or tend to feel depleted.

Heat can be especially helpful after deeper bodywork. A warm bath, hot shower, heat pack or hot water bottle can help the muscles stay soft, relaxed and receptive after treatment. This can be particularly supportive if your body feels tender or as though it has had a workout.

If possible, keep movement gentle for the rest of the day and avoid anything too intense straight afterwards. Nourishing food, warmth, rest and a good night’s sleep can all help your body respond well and recover more comfortably.
